Meeting

Monday, June 1st. The core members of the Asian Sounds Research who are staying at Penang Island for 25 days and 24 nights have safely arrived. Tadashi Yonago and Yoshihito Mizuuchi will be making the basics of this project, and then will constantly be changing it. Mieko Matsumoto and Yuki Higuchi will be photographing and documenting it, and I will be directing them. The core members will watch the whole project to the end. Nothing has begun yet.

Tuesday, June 2nd. We had a meeting at the Hin Bus Depot, which is the venue for this exhibition. It was mainly a meeting of the staff, but for some reason the participants showed up one after another. Eeyan is the excellent manager of Hin Bus Depot. Annabelle is one of the basic artists, Gabija will be managing the talk session, Win Win is taking the photographs and Khring is the event manager. They are actually all lovely women. After the meeting we joined with another artist, Hoo Fan Chon, and confirmed the details about the starting point of the basic artists. We still cannot see the full picture, and there is no way to see it. I asked them to think about what they want to do under this situation, and I will pass his ideas on to the other artists. This is how we start.

It’s night and raining now.

Wednesday, June 3rd. I got to the venue a little late and found Yoshihito cutting some wood, and Tadashi grappling with a drum can. There was no rain, but instead the sun was blazing. The work went on until night. Hin Bus Depot was having their reception desk refurnished, and they were also having something else renovated at the back. It’s hard to tell the difference between the workers and the artists. Many things are slowly, but steadily coming to birth and being made.

Thursday, June 4th. We decided to do a preview during the press conference, and had the press come to see the actual venue. We placed some easily assembled chairs around the stage inside the venue, and held a peaceful press conference.

Although the whole exhibition is far from complete, the members of the press were impressed by the work of each artist. It’s hard to imagine how this unusual form of exhibition will be explained by words. I have never seen or been to such an exhibition before. I can only say that I want the audience to “experience” it along with us. I want everyone to watch over it no matter how far or close they are, because it will be going on for some while.

Oh, I forgot to mention that although there was a flight canceled, the Tenniscoats and Minoru Hatanaka safely arrived to Penang. They all flew in from Malaysia. We took them to a street stand to have some drinks and toasted to their arrival.

Friday, June 5th. Chicken rice for lunch, and then to the venue to discuss about the talk session. There was much to talk about, starting out from the origin of OPEN GATE. The weather today was mild (meaning that it was pleasantly cloudy) so we decided to set our office outside the building. The Tenniscoats were doing a loose sound check, which matched this situation. It matched so well! Hin Bus Depot might be the most matching place for the Tenniscoats on the entire planet. The sound system was better than what I thought it would be, so they used a microphone as well as playing acoustic. This large space was filled by the world of the Tenniscoats. Their sounds will open this GATE. And then it will be stirred along with the sounds that travel through the air.
